DAILY MIRROR – We Find a Bumper 43,171 Jobs in Transport and Logistics

AS part of our Get Britain Working campaign we have tracked down an impressive 43,171 jobs in transport and logistics.

In the run-up to Christmas we’ve found 28,632 vacancies for heavy goods drivers, 6,075 for van drivers and 1,400 bus and coach drivers.

In fact, industry experts say that unless more people start training as drivers, we could be heading for shortages.

Add in the hundreds of other opportunities in other areas such as Transport for London and you can see that keeping the nation moving is a buzzing sector.

“Transport is a key area for business as it’s all about getting goods and passengers from one point to another,” says Jobcentre Plus adviser Lauren Kilbey.

“There are currently thousands of jobs at various entry levels too.

“Some driving jobs just need basic licensing, such as delivery or courier jobs. Others require more experience with an LGV licence for larger container hauliers.

WHERE ARE THE JOBS?

Jobcentre Plus (www.directgov.uk/jobseekers) has 38,146 tran­s­port vacancies, such as a 3.5 tonne van driver in Pres­ton (£6.50), a Class 2 HGV driver in Plymouth (from £8) a 7.5 tonne multi-drop driver in Leeds (£6.50) and a permanent HGV1 driver in Colchester, Essex (£9 an hour). Add to this another 580 warehouse staff such as a stock assistant in Widnes (£6.84) and 198 transport clerks including an administration clerk in Prudhoe, Northumberland (£7.50).

At www.fish4jobs.co.uk we found 830 jobs which ranged from Class 2 drivers in Burton-on-Trent (from £400 a week) to HGC Class 1 night drivers in Warwickshire (from £10 an hour).

We found a further 3,417 vacancies at www.reed.co.uk – 1,096 of them are driving roles, ranging from a 7.5 tonne delivery driver in Tamworth, Staffs (£6.50) to an HGV Class 1 night driver in Lancaster (from £9 an hour).

Others include a reserv­ations clerk at Gatwick (pay negotiable) to Royal Mail drivers in Daventry, Northants (from £9.75).

Supermarkets continue to be extraordinarily successful and in need of drivers.

As the likes of Sainsbury’s (www.sainsburys.co.uk/recruitment) and other store giants record higher profits check whether any of the stores in your area are currently on the lookout for drivers and warehouse staff.

LICENCE RULES

Since the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) was launched in 2009 following a driver shortage anyone over 18 can get an HGV licence (Categories C/C+E). You must pass an HGV test and have the Driver CPC initial qualification or be in the process of taking it.

PAY

Experienced Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) drivers can earn £15,000-£30,000. Drivers of fuel and chemical tanker, who need special training, earn up to £35,000. Forklift truck drivers who pass a special course start on £12,000- £13,500, rising to £14,000-£21,000.
