How hard is the HGV theory test?

Before your HGV driving tests

Applying for Your Provisional Licence

There’s nothing to stop you from starting to study before applying for your provisional licence. However you’ll need your licence to book your tests, so this is an important early step. To apply, you must be at least 18 years old and have a full car driving licence.

The key parts of the provisional application process are your driver medical and licence category. Your GP can fill in the medical part, or we can put you in touch with a medical centre. Training Time

Once your provisional licence is sorted, training can begin. This phase involves a mix of classroom learning, online modules, and driving practice. The objective is to build a solid foundation of knowledge about operating HGVs safely and efficiently. With such a range of course types available, from fast track to part time, how long your training takes is down to your preference. During this time you might find it helpful to try mock theory exams to get fully prepared. 

HGV Exam parts

Your HGV exams are covered by 5 parts. Two of these are theory tests, which take different formats so it’s worth getting experience in how to approach them. 

Part 1: Theory Tests

This first part assesses your understanding of road safety, vehicle handling, and the rules of driving large vehicles on public roads. The test comprises two sections: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception.

In the multiple-choice section, you’ll answer questions based on scenarios you might encounter as an HGV driver. You’ll need to score at least 85 out of 100 to pass. The hazard perception test involves watching video clips and identifying developing hazards. Quick responses are key, as this measures your ability to anticipate potential risks on the road. Your part 1 pass is valid for 2 years, during which time you’ll need to pass the subsequent parts to avoid starting again. 

Part 2: Case Study Test 

The case study test, or Part 2, builds on the theory exam by presenting you with real life scenarios. You’ll need to interpret these situations and answer questions that test your practical understanding of the rules. This section has 50 questions, and you’ll need to score at least 40 to pass. This part also contributes to your final CPC qualification.

3a) Practical Driving Test

Part 3a), the practical driving test, assesses your driving skills in a controlled environment. You’ll demonstrate manoeuvres, reversing, and coupling/uncoupling trailers. Confidence and a calm approach are critical here, as the test examines both your technical skills and your ability to make safe, informed decisions.

Part 3b): On-Road Driving 

In Part 3b), you’ll take your skills to the road. This test evaluates how well you handle an HGV in real traffic conditions. You’ll be assessed on observation, planning, and control. Stay focused and remember the techniques you’ve learned during your training.

Part 4: Practical Demonstration

Part 4 concludes the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) practical demonstration test. You’ll show your ability to keep your vehicle secure, manage emergencies, and maintain vehicle systems. This test is crucial for ensuring that you are not only a skilled driver but also a responsible one.

Ongoing CPC

Maintaining your CPC qualification ensures that drivers remain competent and current with industry standards throughout their careers. To retain your Driver Qualification Card (DQC), which you gain on completion of your initial CPC, you’ll need to complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years.
